When Western Power Distribution’s (WPD) property department purchased and leased several industrial units across the Midlands, Halligan Associate Engineers (Halligans) was engaged at the early stages to assess the suitability of the units from a service aspect.

Halligans specified the mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems, including:

  • Standby generators
  • UPS
  • Distribution
  • Lighting
  • Small power
  • Data
  • Fire alarm
  • Security systems
  • Ventilation
  • VRF air conditioning
  • Hot and cold water

External services were also specified, including lighting, fuel stations, jet wash areas and weigh bridges. To allow the furniture, fixtures and equipment to be installed prior to the central networks IT infrastructure being turned off, the time scale from starting on site to PC was 16 weeks.

All buildings required a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ so Halligans worked closely with assessors to achieve this. SBEM & EPCs credentials were also gained with Halligans’ guidance.

WPD was purchased by National Grid Electrical Distribution in 2021, with Halligans continuing to provide M&E consultancy services to date. This includes a new £20 million depot in Exeter, new garage in Plymouth and a £18 million depot refurbishment in Torquay and Plymouth.
